Drs. Karpinos & Rizzone

Sports Medicine Team Physicians

The Health Enhancement Committee has two team physicians on the committee. As sports medicine physicians, their role in this interdisciplinary team is to consider the medical well-being of the athlete first while helping to advance the other areas of development as students and people. Their goals are to educate the athlete about how to prevent common injuries, highlight the pathway towards healing when they are injured and monitor their overall well-being with both orthopedic and non-orthopedic health conditions.

Dr. Ashley Karpinos is currently undergoing her sports medicine fellowship here at Vanderbilt and will be completed in 2014.  Dr. Karpinos attended Kenyon College and then went to medical school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where she is currently an instructor in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.  She graduated summa cum laude and Phi Bet Kappa with highest honors in Molecular Biology from Kenyon College where she was also an NCAA champion swimmer.  She was the 2003 NCAA Woman of the Year. She graduated AOA from Vanderbilt Medical School in 2013.  Her interests are in pediatric and adult primary care, sports medicine, and public health.

Dr. Karpinos has been devoted to this committee for the past few years and been a major presence for female health topics.  She provides primary coverage for the Vanderbilt Women’s Swim team.  She is married and has a son who she spends her free time with when possible!

Dr. Katie Rizzone was born and raised in Buffalo, New York.  She attended SUNY in Buffalo and was a member of the crew team.  She attended Medical School at UNC Chapel Hill and her residency at Vanderbilt in medicine-pediatrics.

Dr. Rizzone enjoys speaking to the student-athletes on health education topics and has performed a great job in assisting their needs throughout the year.  She came aboard with a strong interest in women’s health but provides knowledge for the proper health care needs for both the male and female athletes.  She has committed in giving freshmen orientation presentations and assists with sport coverage with a variety of the athletic teams.
