Athletic Training Room's

The Vanderbilt Athletic Training Staff Operates out of two athletic rooms, The A.Brant "Pinky" Lipscomb Athletic Training Room, located in the McGugin Center and the Joe Worden Athletic Training Room in the Memorial Gymnasium.

A. Brant "Pinky" Lipscomb Athletic Training Room

The A. Brant "Pinky" Lipscomb Athletic Training Room is named in honor of "Pinky" Lipscomb, who served as the Vanderbilt University Team Physician for 43 years.  Dr. Lipscomb played varsity basketball at Vanderbilt from 1939-1941, excelling both on the court and in the classroom.  After being named to the All-SEC team for two seasons, and leading the tournament in scoring in 1939 and 1941, he drew high praise from the opposition.  Coach Adolf Rupp of the University of Kentucky named Pinky to his "all-opponent team."  When Pinky's time on the court was over, he stepped onto the sidelines becoming the Team Physician in 1947 and held this position until 1990.  He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.

The Lipscomb Athletic Training Room spans approxmiately 4,300 square feet of the McGugin Center.  Vanderbilt student-athletes receive thehighest quality or medical treatment available from 12 Certified Athletic Trainers and the Vanderbilt University Team Physicians.  This training room underwent a facelift during the spring of 2011 with the addition of several Vanderbilt logos to express Commodore pride.

Taping Area
The taping area houses eight separate taping stations enabling a high volume of student-athletes to be taped at one time.

Hydrotherapy Area
The hydrotherapy area houses two therapeutic whirlpools and one dynamic, deep rehabilitation pool.  The rehabilitation pool allows the student-athletes to move in a gravity reduced environment, allowing for exercises to begin sooner following initial injury

Treatment and Rehabilitation Area

In the treatment area, 10 tables are available for therapeutic modalities including the typical ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and ice compression.  Student athletes may also use a bone stimulator, to speed up bone growth and Biowave Pain Therapy System to decrease pain and improve function.

The rehabilitation area is an open space available for many exercises with resistance bands, exercise balls and proprioception mats.

Joe L. Worden Athletic Training Room

Joe L. Worden was named the Head Athletic Trainer at Vanderbilt in 1949.  He was the primary caregiver to all student-athletes until 1971 when he began to focus on football and men's basketball.  In 1984 he was inducted in the National Athletic Trainers' Assocation Hall of Fame.  "Joe Bird" as he was affectionately know, was also inducted into the Middle Tennessee Chapter of National Football Hall of Fame in 1991.  He retired in 1986, but remained close to the program and volunteered his services until his death in 1998.

Joe will always be remembered through the Tennessee Athletic Trainer's Society through the Joe Worden Tennessee Athletic Trainer's Society Clinical Industrial Athletic Training Award.  The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation honors his memory with the Joe L. Worden Courage Award.  He will always be remembered at Vanderbilt by the Joe L. Worden Athletic Training Room in Memorial Gynmasium, serving Men's and Women's Basketball.

Treatment and Taping Area
The new Worden Athletic Training Room is much more open than the previous athletic training room in Memorial Gymnasium.  The more room will allow for more rehabilitation and treatment to take place at the gymnasium as the training room is equipped with an array of rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities.

Hydrotherapy Area
A brand new plunge-cold whirlpool was placed in the Worden Athletic Training Room during the fall of 2011.  This new pool will allow the men's and women's basketball teams to reduce soreness following practices and games.
